REVIEW: The Break-Up by MJ Summers

TITLE: The Break-Up

AUTHOR: MJ Summers

SERIES: Full Hearts #5

PUBLICATION: May 5th 2016 by Gretz Corp

MY  RATING: 5 STARS

When America’s sweetheart, Courtney Bennett, finds out her husband, Brock McCain, America’s heartthrob, is leaving her, she’s sure her life is over. Thirty-nine in Hollywood is tough on any woman, but not as hard as being hunted by the relentless paparazzi. Finding herself holed up in a cabin in Colorado under the care of Wes Young, her new bodyguard, she starts to see that maybe there is life after Hollywood.

Wes Young spent more than twenty years in the Marines and the past two years in protection services. The only thing he protects more carefully than his clients is his heart. When he takes on the task of guarding Courtney Bennett, the last thing he wants to do is spend his days and nights with a spoiled, self-involved actress. Before long, Wes realizes that she is not at all what he thought. For the first time in his life, he finds himself navigating the minefield of love, trying to avoid a broken heart.
Will they risk it all to be together or return to the lives they knew before The Break Up?

ARC received from the author in exchange for an honest review
I liked and loved everything about this book. The perfect book to end one of the best series I’ve read lately.
The story is so romantic that it’s like to watch a movie. The storyline is simple: an Hollywood star actress is hiding from a scandal and a bodyguard is protecting her in a secret and peaceful place.
In this book it was not the story that captivated my attention. The author brings to life two bright, gentle, strong and real characters. They have a complex personality and their growing relationship is a journey into deception, self-esteem, trust and the discovery of true love and friendship.
Courtney is  betrayed by her husband. Her career in Hollywood is ruined and her only mistake has been to trust a man that is a control freak. She trusts him so much that trust becomes complete control not only on her acting career, but also on her own life. Even those who she thought they were friends, actually they are puppets in the hands of her husband, a further means of controlling her. Everything seems normal to Courtney, or nearly so, until the day when a wrong pill changes the course of events.
Wes is called to protect and hide the famous Hollywood actress from the limelight. He is a lonely man, Hollywood isn’t certainly his world. Keeping her hidden in his house in the woods it is not something that he agrees to do willingly, and turns Wes’ life upside down. But neither of them are aware that their forced cohabitation will lead them to discover sides of their personality too long ignored and buried by their past and experiences.
Together they will discover new meanings to the words love, share and care, and only when the break-up forces them to return to their past life, Courtney and Wes will find the courage to change and have a second chance in love.
In this book Courtney undertakes a journey toward self-awareness. She finally realizes to what extent she has allowed others to control her life and her career, made her lose her dignity and freedom. It’s a tormented  path, admitting to not being perfect it’s hard. Losing everything, career, money and affections, is what will give her instead the strength to get up, to find herself and get back her life as a free and adult woman.
She is a great character, sweet, simple, intense.
Wes is a powerful character, not only physically strong and beautiful, but he’s smart, brilliant and Courtney brings out his sweet and protective side.
At the beginning between them there is only a mutual attraction, sexual chemistry, but their relationship is a journey, their feelings grow slowly, each step they take toward self-discovery is a step that brings them
closer to love.
In the mix of all of the events there is always the  unconditional love and support of the family, Wes’ family. And when Harper, Wes’ sister, takes the stage there are laughs and smiles.
The Break-Up is heartwarming, sweet, romantic, engaging.
MJ Summers has created a 5 stars series, a MUST READ, and I will miss all the beautiful characters that have made me cry, laugh and dream.

MJ Summers currently resides in Canada, not far from the Rocky Mountains, with her husband, three young children and their goofy dog. When she’s not writing romance novels, she loves reading (obviously), snuggling up on the couch with her family for movie night (which would not be complete without lots of popcorn and milkshakes), hiking, Zumba and yoga (to make up for the milkshakes), swimming and camping (with lots of gooey s’mores and hard ciders). She also loves shutting down restaurants once a month with her girlfriends. Well, not literally shutting them down, like calling the health inspector or something. More like just staying until they shut the lights off.
MJ is a member of the Romance Writers of America, as well as the International Women’s Writing Guild.
